Sometimes we reach a season where we feel like we’re running on empty. No energy. No margin. No clear direction. Our spiritual tanks feel depleted, our hearts heavy, and our feet dragging. If you’re reading this and your engine feels sputtering, you’re not alone and there is hope.
Recognizing the Empty Tank
Maybe you’ve been giving in so many ways—serving your family, your church, your friends—yet you feel little left for you. Maybe life’s unexpected pressures have drained your soul. The quiet moments are filled with worry instead of rest. Your prayers might feel dry. Your Bible reading routine may have stalled. You might be thinking: “I just don’t have it in me anymore.”
This is a prompt—not to shame you, but to invite you: What if running on empty is a gentle red light from God, asking you to stop, refill, and reconnect?
What the Word Says
-
Isaiah 40:31 says: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
When we wait on the Lord, even when we feel exhausted, He renews us. -
Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest… For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus invites the emptied-out to come to Him—to lay down the heavy load. -
Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Not with our strength…but through Christ’s strength. -
Psalm 23:1-2: “The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.”
When we’re empty, He invites us into rest and restoration.
Why We Run on Empty
Several things put us on that low-fuel warning:
-
Over-giving without refilling — When you constantly serve but don’t allow yourself replenishment, emotionally and spiritually.
-
Pushing through in your own strength — Choosing to “just get through” instead of pausing and letting God be your strength.
-
Neglecting the soul’s needs — Not just the body: your quiet time, worship, confession, meditation, community.
-
Ignoring warning signs — Fatigue, irritability, lack of joy, spiritual dryness. These may be signals, not merely “just life”.
What to Do When the Tank’s Empty
-
Stop and acknowledge it. Admit you’re tired, weary, depleted. This is not failure—it’s honesty.
-
Refuel with God’s presence. Return to the scriptures above. Sit quietly before Him. Let Him speak your name.
-
Rest in the right way. It’s more than sleep (though that can help). Rest in His peace. Let Him relieve the burden.
-
Receive from others. Even strong women need arms around them. Let your sisters bear your load.
-
Re-evaluate your pace. Maybe it’s time to mend your rhythm, prune some commitments, or guard your time with God.
-
Re-connect with your purpose. Remember who you are in Christ. What you’re called to. Your “why”.
A Word for the Women of Dope Women Pray
You, beautiful woman, do not have to shine in your own strength. The very fact you are reading this shows you care. And caring often leads to over-giving. But Jesus doesn’t admire your marathons—He invites you to rest in Him so you can walk with Him, pace by pace, heart aligned with His.
If you feel like you’re running on empty today—take heart. Jesus sees you. He invites you. He will renew your strength if you will lean into Him. This is your invitation to stop the engine, open the hood, let Him pour in the oil, fill the tank with His mercy. Then, when you rise again, you’ll run—not because of you, but because He is powering you.
Prayer
Father, I come before You weary and worn. I confess that my tank is empty, my strength is weak. I ask You to fill me with Your Spirit. Renew my hope. Restore my joy. Help me to rest in You, to trust in Your timing, to lean on Your strength instead of my own. Use me in the way You’ve called me—but let me never forget that I am loved, and I belong to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Journaling & Reflection
-
Where in my life am I running on empty?
-
What warning signs (physical, spiritual, emotional) have I ignored?
-
What does rest look like for me today?
-
How can I invite God’s strength into the empty places?
-
Who can I ask to come alongside me and help carry this season?
You’re not alone. You’re seen. And your Father has not forgotten you.
